Application of a rapid aflatoxin B1 test for animal feed contamination

Nov 11, 2013

Aflatoxin B1 is the most common in food and amongst the most potent genotoxic and carcinogenic aflatoxins. It is produced both by Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. Aflatoxin M1 is a major metabolite of aflatoxin B1 in humans and animals, which may be present in milk from animals fed with aflatoxin B1 contaminated feed. As a result, it will be quite important to make sure animal feed is not contaminated before they enter the milk chain.

Generally, aflatoxin B1 is determined by HPLC-UV, HPLC/MS/MS, and even IAC-UV or IAC-FS, etc. These methodologies are all based on instrumental analysis, which take time and cost a lot, and even may not be applicable in feed factories which possess only few QC apparatus. Thus it will necessary to develop rapid test kit for these labs to do the routine aflatoxin B1 testing in animal feed.

Ring Bioscience’s Aflatoxin B1 test kit (product no.: 400001) is based on dipstick lateral flow immunoassay, which takes only 10min to detect aflatoxin B1 at 5ng/g(ppb) without any special instrument. Feed samples are just ground and mix thoroughly to representative and further extracted with 70% methanol before assay. The whole process include sample preparation may take 20min at most.
