Rapid detection of aminoglycoside antibiotics (kanamycin, gentamicin, streptomycin, etc) in milk

Jul 22, 2013

An aminoglycoside is a molecule or a portion of a molecule composed of amino-modified sugars. Several aminoglycosides function as antibiotics that are effective against certain types of bacteria. They include amikacin, arbekacin, gentamicinkanamycinneomycin, netilmicin, paromomycin, rhodostreptomycin, streptomycin, tobramycin, and apramycin.

Common side effects of aminoglycosides include unsteadiness, dizziness, changes in urine output, loss of appetite, increased thirst, seizures or muscle twitching, nausea and vomiting. Streptomycin sulfate may also cause burning, tingling or numbness of the mouth or face. When gentamicin is administered by injection, skin rash, leg cramps, convulsions and fever can occur. Less common side effects of aminoglycoside medications include skin rash, fever, chills, shaking, drowsiness, trouble breathing and weakness. A less common side effect of streptomycin is loss of vision.

The European Union has established a series of MRLs for aminoglycoside antibiotics in the annex of COMMISSION  REGULATION  (EU)  No 37/2010.
